Kate Ussailis- Light: Inspirations from the Dutch Masters

Kate grew up in many places, always making things, refining techniques and experimenting. As an adult, they came out of university with two degrees in German, a subject that I was not sure I really liked anymore, and experience in seeing the world through the lens of different cultures. After pursuing various retail positions, translation, and a couple of jobs that required wearing an absurd amount of hats. Eventually, making had to be a priority in life even if it didn’t pay the bills. In addition to many day-job-hats, Kate is a weaver and a photographer. Both involve color and texture, but photography is really all about the pursuit of light. Reveling in the discovery of how it changes the perception of texture, the color, and the contrast of lines. Kate uses a digital camera, mostly daylight, but occasionally a lightbulb, and then editing software (Lightroom) to adjust contrast, exposure, and occasionally color to emphasize the beautiful things we see.

An Evening with Poet, Connolly Ryan

Join us for Arts Night Out Northampton as we present poet, Connolly Ryan. He will be reading from his newly released poetry collection, Velocity at Rest, published by Meat For Tea.

"Connolly Ryan’s new poetry collection, Velocity at Rest, is just what its title suggests: poems which paradoxically push forth with the speed of wit and muti-tasking language to the breaking point, before the words, whipped to their limits and leaving the reader amazed, laughing, stunned, and whirled about with their incessant and jocular wordplay, for a moment come to rest in a world reminiscent of St. Francis’s letters to the world and Mary Oliver’s pilgrim-like meditations. What a collection this is, where every poem invites you to step in and then stop and ask yourself what it all means—your family, your home, your memories and traumas and pent-up angers and, yes, those rest points only a mother and wife and family can offer, as you trod on your journey to wherever you are going, but resting too to listen to the trees and the snowflakes covering you in their resplendent beauty. Very seldom have I come across a book of poems that has satisfied the spiritual hunger in me like these.”

Ocean Vuong- Mom and Nicky

On public view for the first time ever, this stunning photograph by Ocean Vuong, 𝑴𝒐𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒚, is currently installed at Sub Rosa until September 30th, 2024. 𝑴𝒐𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑵𝒊𝒄𝒌𝒚 is one portrait from a larger body of work that will be shown at the Toledo Museum of Art in October.

Ocean has described this photo project, which was first announced in the July issue of @cultured_mag, as "15 years in the making." The series includes photographs of Ocean's mother and her coworkers during their shift at his mother's nail salon in 2009. Ocean wrote: "I intended this session to be the first of many, hoping to document them through the seasons. But three months later, with the recession in full swing, my mother declared bankruptcy and sold her salon. The place that sustained us for over two decades, from which my brother and I were raised, where we worked answering the phones, evaporated overnight. The photos I took that one fateful day would be the only ones I have of that place.

15 years later, perhaps as a cumbersome way of grieving, I spent a week in July photographing my brother, who moved in with me after our mother died. What began as a study of a place, the small but mighty people who live, labor, and lose there, became an exercise in looking at the only thing left of that place: my little brother, Nicky. I suppose some projects change the way some desires change through the years, not by deliberate searching, but by discovering a more-ness, a dynamism, in what remains. In this case, the person bound to us by blood."

Cindy Mager- Spirit Guided Artworks

Cindy Mager, a New Englander, taught herself to paint while living in Texas, where, as a young woman, she was diagnosed with mental illness, as she self-disclosed in her frank and honest artist's statement. Piecing together what life balance she could, she used her skill to produce hundreds of artworks instructed by supernatural entities. Her new paintings will be on display.

BLUE LIBERTY- Terry Rooney

Terry Rooney was born in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, the symbol that welcomed her ancestors to the land of liberty. Perhaps that is why this figure became a central theme in this artist’s work for more than 40 years. This exhibit includes scratchboard, multi-panel drawings, and painted constructions. Newer constructions are upcycled stage sets with two intersecting houses addressing social upheavals and the symbol of Liberty. Showing at the New England Visionary Artists Museum September 6-28.

Visiting Artist: Kelly Potter, Sculptural Pottery Exhibition

As a continuation of our Premiering Potters series, please help us welcome visiting artist Kelly Potter to the store!

Kelly Potter works with ceramics, oil painting, and sculpture/video mediums at her studio in Easthampton, MA. Her slab-built ceramic “critters” began as a playful investigation of clay and wood firing processes. Utilizing the spontaneity of the medium to foster playfulness and experimentation - her critters evolved to become not one species but many fuzed together. Each one channeling themes of awkwardness, dissociation, and bliss.

Kelly’s work will be on display and available for purchase Sept. 1st through Sept. 30th at Pinch. Kelly herself will be in the store on Arts Night Out, Sept. 13th from 5-8pm for an opening reception. Wine and light snacks will be served!

The installation takes viewers on a walk through an imagined storybook scene twisted into abstraction.
